Serum Interleukin-6 Concentration in Various Thyroid disease, As A Marker of Thyroid Destructive Process

Abstract
Interleukin-6(IL-6) is a pleiotrophic cytokine able to stimulate the hepatic synthesis of acute phase protein. This cytokine is synthesized by various cells, and human and animal thyrocyte also can synthesize and secrete IL-6 Because IL-6 is
produced by
thyrocyte, inflammatory or noninflammatory process that causes thyroid cell damage can be associated with increase in its serum concentration. So, IL-6 can be used as a marker of thyroid-destructive processes.
The present study was conducted to determine the usefulness of serum IL-6 measurement for the differential diagnosis between thyroid tissue destructive and non - destructive thyrotoxicosis in 18 patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) and 13
patients
with postpartum (PPT) of thyrotoxic period, 18 patients with Graves' disease and 20 normal healthy controls.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The serum IL-6 concentrations in SAT and PPT patients were 292¡¾27.6 and 163¡¾15.2 fmol/L, respectively, which were significantly higher than those of 20 control subjects. The IL-6 concentration returned to normal value after normalization
of
thyroid hormone.
2. Serum TBG concentration was reduced in thyrotoxic phase of SAT and remission of thyrotoxic phase was associated with a significant increase of TBG.
3. There was an inverse correlation between serum IL-6 and TBG concentration in thyrotoxic phase of SAT.
In conclusion, SAT and PPT are associated with the increased IL-6 in thyrotoxic phase which normalizes upon remission of the disease. So, IL-6 may be a useful marker of destructive thyroid process.
